Shimogamo-Jinja Shrine

  Dating back to the 6th century, Shimogamo-Jinja Shrine is nestled in the northern part of Kyoto, specifically in the peaceful area of Tadasu no Mori. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the oldest shrines in the city, originally established to honor the deity Kamo-Taketsunomi no Mikoto. The main feature of the shrine is its intricate wooden architecture, accentuated by a stunning vermillion torii gate that welcomes visitors at the entrance. Throughout the year, particularly in May, the shrine hosts a vibrant festival known as the Aoi Matsuri, where participants don traditional attire and celebrate with a procession. Visitors can explore lush forest trails, admire various Shinto rituals, and marvel at the preservation of nature surrounding the shrine.
