Fort Santiago
Fort Santiago stands at the edge of Intramuros, Manila's historic district. Built in 1571, it served as a key defense structure against foreign invaders and is recognized as a national shrine dedicated to national hero José Rizal, who was imprisoned there before his execution in 1896. The fort's main feature is its well-preserved stone walls, which stretch approximately 2.5 kilometers and provide a glimpse into colonial military architecture. Visitors can explore the expansive grounds year-round, while the quieter months of June to August may offer a more serene experience. Within Fort Santiago, guests can wander through lush gardens, view historical artifacts, and learn about the Philippines’ rich history through engaging exhibits.
