« To get to the main resorts of Sri Lanka (Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa) from the airport, the simplest option is to take a taxi, which currently costs between $60-$70. They've recently built a speedy road, so it only takes about 2.5 hours to reach Hikkaduwa. It's a good idea to find a company and split the cost among a few people to make it budget-friendly. The cheapest option is the bus, which costs around $2.

You first need to get to the Colombo bus station (around an hour away from the airport), and then transfer to another bus heading towards Galle or Matara. This ride takes about 4-5 hours. Be careful if you take the EXPRESS bus (which takes 2-3 hours), as it can take you directly to Hikkaduwa without further stops.

If you happen to miss Hikkaduwa, don’t worry; you can return for about $5-$6 on a tuk-tuk. Another option is to take a train from the central Colombo station, which offers a very scenic route alongside the coast. We’ve used both taxi and bus and have found the experience quite different, so pick the option that suits you best. 😊 »

« Vinyl prints are a wonderful opportunity to create an inexpensive yet delightful surprise. Order a size of 5x7cm for around $0.34 featuring your friend's favorite actor and gift it to them :-) They can be easily sent in a paper envelope – make an interesting addition to a letter or a card. »

« The train is super cool. The carriages are pretty clean, and the fare is only $1.60 (for 267 miles). They bring water and snacks (about $0.10 per pack) through the cabin, along with a bunch of other snacks. In short, life is good. 😊 »

« Another heartfelt conversation. His name is Sarak, 57 years old, and he has been fishing for 30 years. He earns $4 a day and is actively learning English to work in a hotel where the pay starts at $10 a day. »
