« The historic center of Bern is located on a peninsula in the bend of the Aare River. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, as indicated by signs on all its significant buildings. In 1405, Bern suffered greatly from a fire. There's plenty to see in the Old Town, particularly the late Gothic cathedral (the Münster), which unfortunately is currently under scaffolding, the clock tower, and, of course, the sculptural fountains and arcade which stretch for a total of 6 kilometers.
Bern was founded by Duke Berthold V of Zähringen in 1191. From the 13th to the 17th centuries, it served as an imperial city and joined the Swiss Confederation in the 14th century. In the 16th century, the Reformation took place in Bern, making it one of the Protestant cantons of Switzerland. Since 1848, the city has been home to the residence of the Swiss parliament and government. »
