« The Indian totem pole in Seattle, USA, has quite an interesting history. In 1899, American businessmen took it from the Indigenous people in Alaska and brought it to the city. The Indigenous community sued and ended up receiving $500 instead of the sought $20,000. Almost half a century later, there was an arson incident, and the Americans reached out to the Indigenous people (the original owners) to commission a replica. After receiving the payment, the Indigenous community sent a response: "Thank you for paying for the first one. Send us the same amount again, and we’ll make you a new one." Regardless, the totem still graces Pioneer Square in rainy Seattle. »
