« Maybe you've heard about the hotel in Nairobi for $600 a night, where giraffes peek through the windows at dignified guests, and you can feed them? Just a hundred meters from that hotel, similar delights cost $10. If you take the food in your mouth (I’m not responsible for your associations), the giraffe grabs its food with its tongue. So it feels like you’re kind of kissing. 😄🥰 »

« Residents of the slums earn around $100-150 a month (if they have a job). Skilled professionals in Kenya can make about $1000. These individuals live a bit differently. I went on a tour of the slums. A European woman helped local guys set up a socially responsible business. The tour began with a visit to a massive second-hand market. »

« Prices in Africa are tough. We snagged our hotel for $60, while it's usually $80-90. It's supposedly three stars, but it feels more like a refugee shelter. A taxi ride around the city for us Westerners costs around $40. A trip to the giraffe sanctuary, waiting for an hour, and coming back sets you back $100! But we found another solution. »

« While part of the team - including me - was in the mountains, the other half visited an orphaned elephant sanctuary. Every day in Africa, poachers kill several elephants (along with rhinos, lions, and wildebeests, whose meat is sold as veal), sometimes the number reaches into the dozens. Each year, tens of thousands of animals perish: in China, one pound of ivory fetches $1,500. Meanwhile, a rhino horn can sell for $65,000.

« In the poorer neighborhoods of Nairobi, you’ll immediately notice coalitions of furniture traders right on the roadside. They handcraft all sorts of furniture. It’s incredibly affordable (for instance, a beautiful woven chair costs just $8). The most striking aspect is the long stretches dedicated to coffin making. »
