Kinkaku-Ji Temple
Kinkaku-Ji Temple, officially known as Rokuon-ji, sits at 1 Kinkakujicho in Kyoto's northern district. Originally constructed in 1397, this Zen temple was built as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and later converted into a temple following his death. The temple's most notable feature is its top two stories that are covered in gold leaf, reflecting beautifully off the surrounding pond. Visitors will find the temple is especially picturesque in December, when the contrast of the golden structure against the stark winter landscape creates a striking scene. As you stroll through the meticulously landscaped gardens, you can explore various paths and enjoy views of the stunning architecture and numerous species of flora, including cherry blossoms and maple trees.
