Moss Temple

  Moss Temple, officially known as Koke-dera, is located in the northern part of Kyoto, near the picturesque area of Arashiyama. Dating back to the mid-14th century, this temple is renowned for its unique garden, which is home to over 120 species of moss covering approximately 2,000 square meters. Visitors often come to appreciate the tranquil landscape, especially during the peak growth season from mid-April to June, when the green hues are most vibrant. Access to the temple is limited and requires a prior reservation, allowing guests to fully experience its serene atmosphere. Inside, the temple features a modest but significant hall housing a statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, alongside a beautiful view of the surrounding greenery.
