Sanjūsangen-dō
Sanjūsangen-dō, found on the eastern edge of Kyoto, is a striking Buddhist temple renowned for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Built in 1164, this long hall stretches an impressive 120 meters (394 feet) and features 1,001 carved figures—each uniquely portrayed. Visitors often come to see the temple's serene atmosphere, especially during the spring, when cherry blossoms bloom nearby, enhancing the tranquil setting. The annual archery event, known as "Tōshiya," held in January, draws many spectators who gather to witness the skill of the participants. At Sanjūsangen-dō, you can stroll through the hall, marvel at the intricate sculptures, and absorb the temple's profound history.
