Wat Umong
Built in the 14th century, Wat Umong is tucked away in the foothills of Chiang Mai, specifically in the Suthep district, near the iconic Doi Suthep mountain. This unique temple is renowned for its ancient underground tunnels and large chedi, which are surrounded by a tranquil forest teeming with nature. Originally founded as a meditative retreat for monks, Wat Umong offers visitors a glimpse into Buddhist practices amidst its serene setting. In October, the temple is particularly vibrant due to the lush greenery and blooming flowers, creating an inviting atmosphere. Travelers can explore the extensive grounds, visit the meditation areas, and observe the local wildlife, including various bird species and the odd stray cat lounging in the sun.
