Shoes on the Danube bank
Shoes on the Danube Bank sits at the edge of the Danube River in Budapest, specifically in the Belváros-Lipótváros district. This poignant memorial was created in 2005 to honor the victims of the Holocaust who were shot at the riverbank during World War II. The installation features 60 pairs of cast iron shoes, symbolizing the lives lost and the heartbreaking events of that era, laid out along the promenade. It’s particularly striking to visit in December, when the stark contrast of the cold metal against the shimmering river highlights its historical weight. Visitors can walk along the riverbank, reflect on the memorial, and engage with the surrounding scenery of the beautiful cityscape.
