Castle Island

  Castle Island sits at the entrance of Boston Harbor, within the South Boston neighborhood. Dating back to the early 17th century, this historic site was originally used for military defense and features Fort Independence, a star-shaped fortress completed in 1851. Today, Castle Island serves as a recreational area where visitors can enjoy a scenic 1.5-mile loop for walking or jogging along the waterfront. During the summer months, families often gather for picnics and sightseeing, making it a lively spot to soak up some sun. Visitors can also experience the variety of local wildlife, including seabirds and the occasional seal, while taking in views of the harbor and the city skyline.
