Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Overcharge Trick (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis in Sihanoukville often quote exaggerated flat rates to unsuspecting tourists, particularly from the airport or bus station. Always use registered taxis or rideshare apps and confirm the fare beforehand.

Currency Exchange Con (Medium Risk) - Some exchange booths advertise favorable rates but covertly charge high fees through unfavorable conversion practices, especially near beaches and tourist areas. Stick to official banks or reputable hotels for currency exchange and ask for the exact rates with no hidden fees.

Food Portion Hoax (Medium Risk) - Some restaurants serve small portions disguised as full meals or offer high-priced menus featuring dishes that never arrive, mainly in beachfront areas. Always check online reviews and ensure you confirm the prices before ordering; consider asking locals for recommendations.

Phony Beach Activities (Medium Risk) - Tour operators on the beach may promote unrealistically cheap rates for boat trips or water sports, later adding hidden fees for equipment or insurance. Choose established companies and verify prices and terms before booking.

Fake Charity Collectors (Low Risk) - Individuals pretending to be collecting for local charities may approach tourists in busy areas, such as Serendipity Beach, asking for donations. Politely decline and, if inclined to donate, research the charity's legitimacy and donate directly through official channels.

Street Food Surcharge (Low Risk) - Some street vendors might charge inflated prices for food in tourist-heavy locations like Otres Beach by claiming that prices are higher for foreigners. Familiarize yourself with local pricing on food items and negotiate or ask for the local price upfront.

« We took a little ride around the area today, and it’s a weekend, so the local Cambodians are out in droves at all the beaches. We weren’t even allowed on the bridge, even if we offered to pay, because families of police officers were strolling there, and tourists aren't allowed. Every second European on a scooter gets stopped and fined, but we seemed to have luck on our side today. No corruption at all. »

« Cambodia is renowned not only for its paradise beaches and beautiful sunsets but also for its police officers with a deep sense of empathy and high level of patriotism. »

« Cambodia, compared to Goa, is still less populated by tourists. There aren't many supermarkets or souvenir shops. The beaches are not as crowded with vendors selling beads and sarongs, although there are plenty of beggars. In the city, you'll see many people with disabilities, which reflects the fact that the country recently emerged from a long war... This contributes to the pervasive poverty and widespread theft. »

« We actually got a little lost, detouring around police checkpoints. »

« Hi, to be honest, the local police aren't great. »

« Monkeys are definitely cute, but it's better not to approach adult individuals, especially the aggressive ones☝️ One of them jumped over the fence onto a girl's back and bit or scratched her, or maybe even both. »

« Today I took a walk around the neighborhood with some friends. They have four dogs that joined us on our adventure. Locals walk with their dogs for safety; they say that no one will mess with you if you have dogs around. There are instances where bags can get snatched or people might threaten you with a knife—Cambodians are tough folks! 🐕‍🦺🏙️ »
