Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For
Taxi Fare Scam (High Risk) - Many unofficial taxis at Mumbai airport or in popular areas like Colaba may claim that their meters are broken and will insist on charging a set fee that is significantly higher than normal. Always use the official taxi stands and ensure the meter is operational before entering the vehicle.
Auto Rickshaw Overcharging (Medium Risk) - Auto rickshaws in busy areas such as Juhu and Marine Drive may refuse to use the meter or claim it is malfunctioning, which allows them to charge inflated fares. To protect yourself, agree on a fare before getting in or use ride-hailing apps where prices are fixed.
Restaurant Bill Tricks (Medium Risk) - Some restaurants in tourist-heavy spots like Fort may include hidden charges or service fees, and may also try to trick you into tipping more by providing subpar service to misdirect attention. Always check your bill carefully and ask for clarification on any unfamiliar charges before paying.
Pickpocketing in Crowded Areas (Medium Risk) - Areas such as the Gateway of India and CST railway station are hotspots for pickpockets, who often work in groups to distract you while one takes your belongings. Stay vigilant, keep your valuables close, and consider using a money belt for added security.
Fake Money Exchange Bureaus (Medium Risk) - Be wary of unlicensed money exchange spots in busy markets like Colaba Causeway, as they may offer attractive rates but provide counterfeit currency or charge high fees. Always use banks or licensed exchange counters that display their rates clearly.
Street Performance Distraction Scam (Low Risk) - In popular areas like Chowpatty Beach, groups may perform tricks or shows to draw a crowd, while another pickpocket works unnoticed in the throng. Avoid getting too close to such performances without being aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings.
Counterfeit Goods in Markets (Low Risk) - While shopping in places like Crawford Market, you may encounter vendors selling counterfeit items claiming they are authentic. Familiarize yourself with the genuine articles beforehand and be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true.
« The taxi drivers in Mumbai are probably the most cunning I've encountered. Nowhere have I seen such blatant, grand, and elegant attempts to cheat us. »
« India is something else!!! While I was trying to catch a taxi, I almost ended up with a cart pulled by a cow.)))!!! Mumbai has truly won me over; I spent the whole day wandering around, occasionally stopping by landmarks and little cafes to catch my breath and cool off. It was blazing hot outside, around 86°F. The city feels really friendly compared to some other places I’ve been. Safe too, maybe because it doesn’t feel overwhelmed by tourists. In general, India is like a massive station, bustling with people selling, traveling, and making noise in their own ways. I’m wrapping up the day with a smile and sore feet!!!))) »
« Friends, if you've read it, you know what place I'm talking about. The very mosque where Linbaba loved to sit and met Abdel Kader Khan. In the novel, everything is described quite beautifully and intriguingly, but in reality, there's a terrible stench of fish and local slums, crowds of Muslims, and all sorts of dubious characters like beggars and dangerous individuals who shout behind your back: "F*ck off, Yank!" So it's better to stick to books! 😅 »
« Mumbai's security guards remind me more of British policemen.. :) By the way, I found out that the Mumbai police is only second in size to New York! It ranks as the second largest police force in the world among megacities! »
« Almost everyone here has a really hard time with English. I was trying to explain to the driver with gestures that I needed to exchange some currency because I was short 100 rupees to pay. I was on my way to the airport.
And then something unbelievable happened: a man who miraculously understood English translated for the driver and added the 100 rupees himself, saying that since I was in a foreign country, it was no big deal.
I checked – all my money, documents, and belongings were safe. For India, this is something incredibly surprising – not only did they not steal, but they actually helped. 😊 »
