Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For
Taxi Meter Trick (Medium Risk) - Some unofficial taxis may claim their meters are malfunctioning and insist on inflated flat rates, particularly at Incheon Airport and Seoul Station. To avoid this, use only official taxi stands and verify that the meter is functioning before starting your ride.
Street Lottery Scam (High Risk) - Operatives may approach tourists with a fake lottery game where you can win money, usually in popular tourist areas like Myeongdong or Hongdae. Avoid engaging in such games and politely decline to participate as it often leads to high-pressure tactics for payment.
Fake Guide Scam (Medium Risk) - Individuals may pose as tourist guides in historic areas like Gyeongbokgung Palace and offer unsolicited help, which can lead to significant charges for “services.” Always confirm official tour guides beforehand and reject unsolicited offers from strangers.
Restaurant Menu Trick (Medium Risk) - Some eateries might present a menu with inflated prices upon checkout, particularly in crowded districts like Itaewon. To avoid unwelcome surprises, always ask for the prices before ordering and make sure you’re being shown the correct menu.
Money Exchange Scam (Medium Risk) - Some currency exchange booths may advertise higher rates but charge excessive fees hidden in the transaction process. Stick to reputable currency exchange offices, particularly at airports or major banks, and verify rates online before exchanging any money.
Fake Goods at Markets (Low Risk) - In popular markets like Namdaemun or Dongdaemun, some vendors may sell counterfeit local souvenirs or designer goods at low prices. Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and check for quality and authenticity before making a purchase.
Public Transport Trick (Low Risk) - In the metro system, some may inadvertently sell you invalid tickets or mistakenly direct you to incorrect platforms, especially at busy stations like Gangnam or Seoul Station. Always use the official ticket machines, and double-check the validity of any purchased ticket.
« Of course, falling into the water requires special effort, but you can't do without a life jacket. Safety measure with heightened attention after Sewol... »
« Good day, everyone! I was so eager to talk about the cheerful sunshine here and all that jazz... But unfortunately, I'm once again "glued" to the TV, more gunfire and explosions, police are injured, and a random passerby has been killed. May there be light at the end of the tunnel! And here’s a photo from Seoul!) »
« You will be warned about all the dangers in Korea by cute characters, but only in Korean, as foreigners are immortal here ^^ They only provide English translations at very public, touristy, and municipal places + establishments catering to European tastes. A lot of information remains untranslated, and that's a pity, but you can manage :) »
« By the way about democracy... in the hall of photographs, taken by what seems to be a Dutch photographer/journalist in North Korea, photography is prohibited... this is the first and only photo, and it's a shame... there were many interesting works. »
« Now, let’s dive into the grittier side of Korea, especially Seoul. Like any old city, Seoul is burdened with narrow, dirty, forgotten streets. And on these very streets, you can easily find some adventures. Considering how safe Seoul is, these adventures are likely of a different kind. For instance, the red "light" in the center of the frame suggests that somewhere close, exchanges for intimate services are happening. The concept of safety is further confirmed by the sight of lonely ladies wandering in the middle of the night. You can interpret "wandering" in both senses; they are often quite tipsy too. In fact, around midnight, 20% of pedestrians are drunk, with half of them completely wasted. It’s a bit grim, but it seems everyone’s indifferent to it. There are no homeless people. No stray dogs either. »
« The city gives a great impression: it's safe, clean, and beautiful! And the locals are very friendly: when they're having trouble explaining something in English, they simply walk with you and show you! :) It's super convenient :D »
« Besides the enclosed area, there are also outdoor attractions. This one has no safety belts since it's completely enclosed, so you can't fall out even if you really want to—it's just our little sun. You go around slowly and monotonously, but it allows you to peacefully look around. Getting out isn't easy without help, and getting in can be tricky too. With a backpack on your back and a kid in your arms—and another one too—it's quite a tight squeeze. But the staff has mastered the art of tossing and pulling guests in and out. 😊🎢 »
