« Mount Lavinia Beach is the nearest decent beach to Colombo. You can reach it by tuk-tuk in about 30 minutes. Let’s consider a visit to this beach as Day 1.
If you’ve set aside a whole day for your stay in Colombo, I recommend stopping by to splash around a bit. The view here is stunning: a wide beach with golden sand, palm trees, and the roaring Indian Ocean. To be honest, I didn’t enjoy swimming here much. You see, it’s an open sea. There are no reefs to block the waves, so they hit the shore quite forcefully and can knock you off your feet, even if they don’t look intimidating at first glance. Also, the waves bring sand with them, so when you come out of the water, you’ll definitely want to rinse off.
It’s charming here. The exotic scenery, the almost deserted beach, and the ocean breeze are delightful, but I wouldn’t choose this beach for my main relaxation spot. »
