What to Try in Krabi

Must-try Dishes
Khao Tom - Rice Soup - This comforting dish features rice simmered in a lightly flavored broth, often with chicken or shrimp. Locals savor it for breakfast, sometimes spicing it up with a sprinkle of fresh herbs.

Kao Pad - Fried Rice - Stir-fried rice with garlic, vegetables, and options like chicken or seafood, creating a hearty meal. Street vendors serve it all day, and it's common to see locals devouring it during lunch breaks.

Massaman Curry - Kaeng Massaman - A rich and aromatic curry made with tender beef or chicken, peanuts, and potatoes, reflecting influences from Persian cuisine. This dish is a popular choice for dinner, often enjoyed with steamed jasmine rice.

Som Tum - Green Papaya Salad - Shredded green papaya mixed with chilies, lime, and peanuts, creating a tangy dish that pairs invigoratingly with grilled meats. You’ll find street-side vendors serving it fresh, especially during hot afternoons.

Pat Thai - Pad Thai - Stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp or chicken, tofu, bean sprouts, and peanuts, all coming together in a sweet-and-savory sauce. Locals often enjoy it as a quick lunch, but avoid ordering “extra spicy” unless you can handle the heat!

Tom Yum Goong - Spicy Shrimp Soup - A bold, sour soup featuring shrimp, lemongrass, and galangal that delivers a kick. Popular as an evening dish, it’s best enjoyed in cooler weather when you crave something warm.

Gaeng Keow Wan - Green Curry - This vibrant dish showcases chicken or tofu in a spicy green curry sauce made from fresh herbs and coconut milk. Typically eaten during the rainy season, it's a warming comfort food perfect for sharing with family.

Nam Prik Ong - Spicy Tomato Dip - A savory dip made from ground pork and tomatoes, often served with fresh vegetables. It’s usually shared as a snack during social gatherings, and its different flavor profiles can really surprise you!

Desserts & Drinks
Chao Khao - ชาวข้าว (rice water drink) - A refreshing beverage made from boiled rice, sugar, and sometimes a hint of pandan flavor. It’s typically enjoyed by locals during hot afternoons and is a favorite among families at street markets.

O-liang - โอเลี้ยง (Thai iced coffee) - Strong brewed coffee mixed with sweetened condensed milk and served over ice. Many locals get it to kickstart their day, with some surprising it with a shot of whiskey for an extra kick on weekends!

Nam Manao - น้ำมะนาว (lime soda) - Sparkling water mixed with freshly squeezed lime juice and a touch of sugar, served cold with ice. Popular during the sweltering months, it's a go-to refresher at beaches or after a spicy meal, enjoyed with friends in the late afternoon.

Khanom Chan - ขนมจันทน์ (layered dessert) - A colorful, chewy coconut and pandan cake served in layers, perfect for occasions like weddings and festivals. It's often cut into bite-sized pieces, enjoyed at family gatherings, where the chewy texture and sweet aroma keep everyone coming back for more!

Ice Kachang - ไอศกรีมกะทิ (shaved ice dessert) - Soft, fluffy shaved ice topped with vibrant syrup, sweetened condensed milk, and a mix of tantalizing toppings like red beans and sweet corn. Great for cooling off during the humid days, you’ll typically find this at local snacks stalls after lunch as a midday treat.

By the way, don’t make the common mistake of calling O-liang just “coffee” – it’s all about that sweet condensed milk twist! And trust me, you’ll want to enjoy the Chao Khao whenever you see it being made fresh; there's nothing quite like it!

Overview of Cuisine and Specialties

Walking through Krabi, you can’t help but notice the bustling energy of meal times. Locals typically enjoy their breakfast around 7:00 to 9:00 AM, with many opting for a quick bowl of kway teow (rice noodles) from street vendors. Lunch generally falls between noon and 1:30 PM, where you might find a variety of dishes from pad Thai to spicy salads at local eateries, often costing between ฿50 to ฿150 depending on the area. Dinner is typically enjoyed later, around 6:00 to 9:00 PM, with families gathering to share a feast.

In terms of dining districts, Ao Nang is a hotspot for visitors offering a mix of local and international cuisine at various price points. Street food stalls are slightly cheaper, often serving meals at around ฿30 to ฿60, whereas restaurants along the beachfront can charge up to ฿300 for a more upscale dining experience. The town center tends to reflect a mid-range market, with meals averaging around ฿80 to ฿200.

Oh, and before I forget – payment customs here are quite straightforward. Most places accept cash only, with local ATMs easily accessible. It’s wise to carry cash of ฿1,000 to ฿2,000, especially for street food, as smaller vendors may not take cards. You’ll also notice that tipping is not obligatory, but rounding up to show appreciation for good service is a common practice.

One authentic local dining habit to keep in mind is the communal sharing of dishes at dinner, which encourages sampling various flavors and fosters a sense of togetherness. It’s a delightful way to experience the rich tapestry of Thai cuisine. However, a common tourist mistake is ordering too much at once, often leading to wasted food – sharing is definitely the way to go here!

For those planning to dine out, I’d recommend avoiding the rush around lunch when places can be packed, particularly during weekends. Aim for meals before noon or after 1:30 PM for a more relaxed experience. As for reservations, they aren’t typically needed unless you’re heading to higher-end places, but it can be a good idea on weekends when foot traffic increases.

With the local dining scene continuously evolving, I've noticed a surge in interest for plant-based options and fusion dishes. It’s intriguing to see how younger locals are experimenting with traditional recipes while incorporating international influences. As Krabi’s food culture grows, it’s clear it will keep surprising us in delicious ways.

« In the evening, we stopped by a bar known for the best cocktails in Krabi. The cocktails are truly impressive, so delicious and super affordable! 😍 You can't beat the prices. However, they don't serve food here; you're encouraged to bring it from a nearby store or street vendor. So, we sipped on cocktails on an empty stomach before heading out for dinner... But I really loved the atmosphere! The owner is a lively guy, mingling with everyone despite his limited English. He's cheerful and attentive! 🎉 It’s a pity that we have an early start and can't stay to enjoy the evening guitar music... »

« It seems that this time we've hit the pineapple season - they're sold everywhere: in markets, along the roads, near pineapple "fields," from cars... Prices range from 15 baht to 90 baht per piece. Juicy, sweet, aromatic! 🍍✨ »

« To find a restaurant with decent prices at the resort, you need to: 1) move away from the beach 2) turn off the main street. Tips from Captain Obvious :) We found one! With two-digit prices, haha)) So, a plate of rice isn’t 150++ baht, but just 50! »

« Vitamins!!! Watermelons, they’re watermelons anywhere! But! Usually, when you buy them in St. Petersburg, they can be pink or have some strange aftertaste... should I even mention this one is just divine!!! But pricey... 0.61 USD per kg))) (Today's exchange rate is 1 USD - 32.72 THB)))) Dragon fruit (the pink one) has a kind of confusing taste... good for quenching thirst and hunger))) Pineapples - I honestly have never liked them! But these!!!!!!! I could eat five at once, they are so juicy and flavorful... it's hard to share them with anyone)))) We found a place where you can buy them for just 0.09 USD!!!!! Closer to tourist areas, the price goes up to 0.92 USD each! (These bananas we bought while they were still green. They’re some unusual variety - thick, short, and have large seeds inside. When they turn yellow, they’re delicious, but don’t eat them when they’re green)! Yuck)))) The cost is 0.61 USD per bunch) To the right is guava - we haven't tried it yet. The bunch of balls is longan! I'm mad about it!!! So sweet, tastes like ripe melon. 1 kg - 2.45 USD. It’s a pity that my stomach isn't like rubber... ((( »

« The food market, or whatever you call it, is quite something. I’m not a fan of Thai cuisine; the smell is quite strong. But in Krabi Town, the food prices are 1.5 to 2 times lower than in Phuket. »

« Baltika 7 beer, bottle $2. This is quite a treat! »
