Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Fare Negotiation Trick (High Risk) - Unofficial taxi drivers may approach tourists at Larnaca Airport offering flat rates that are significantly higher than metered fares. Always use official taxi stands and confirm the use of a meter before getting in or agree on the fare upfront.

Hotel Booking Scams (Medium Risk) - Some tourists may encounter fake websites offering significantly cheaper rates for popular Larnaca hotels, particularly during peak season. Stick to trusted booking platforms and confirm reservations directly with the hotels to avoid this scam.

Street Performer Distractors (Medium Risk) - In areas like Finikoudes Promenade, street performers may create distractions, while an accomplice pickpockets belongings. Stay aware of your surroundings and keep belongings secured when near street performances, especially in crowded areas.

Currency Exchange Overcharges (Medium Risk) - Some exchange bureaus may offer much lower rates or hidden fees, especially those located near tourist attractions. Always check the exchange rate online before using services and opt for banks or well-reviewed currency exchange shops.

Restaurant Menu Pricing Tricks (Low Risk) - In certain restaurants, especially along the beachfront, menus might display prices without including additional service charges or taxes. Always ask if the prices on the menu are inclusive of taxes and service fees to avoid surprises on the bill.

Souvenir Counterfeits (Low Risk) - Popular souvenir shops in Larnaca, especially in tourist-heavy areas, may sell imitation goods labeled as authentic Cypriot crafts. Research common souvenirs and prices beforehand and purchase from reputable stores to ensure authenticity.

« Cyprus signs. I find the street signs quite amusing 😊 Judging by the infographics, it's forbidden to move around with a rolling suitcase or an umbrella, and standing on your head is definitely a no-go, especially if it's exploding! It’s also not allowed to walk with your dog off-leash 😄 Just take a look at the girl without an arm and the blind boy - they’ll never catch a taxi! But what really cracked me up was the sign that read “Dad and his resisting daughter.” I can just hear it: “Dad, noooo, I’m not going under that truck!” 🤣 Or maybe he’s not even her dad? 🤔 »
