Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Meter Trick (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis often claim that their meter is broken and demand inflated flat rates, especially at the airport or tourist hotspots like Syntagma Square. To avoid this, only use taxis from official stands, ensure the meter is running before you start your trip, and consider using ride-hailing apps for transparency.

Pickpocketing Gangs (High Risk) - In crowded areas such as Monastiraki Square and Athens Metro stations, you may encounter groups of individuals who distract you while another steals your belongings. Keep your valuables secure, use anti-theft bags, and remain vigilant, especially in crowded situations like public transport or markets.

Fake Charity Collectors (Medium Risk) - You might encounter individuals claiming to be raising money for various charities or causes, especially near tourist sites like the Acropolis. Always verify the legitimacy of such claims or simply refrain from giving, as many are scams.

Menu Price Manipulation (Medium Risk) - Some restaurants or cafés may not display prices clearly or may charge tourists significantly more than locals for the same dish, especially in Plaka. Always ask for a menu with prices before ordering, and consider checking reviews online beforehand.

Currency Exchange Scams (Medium Risk) - Counterfeit currency notes may be offered during exchange transactions in busier areas like Omonia Square. Use only licensed exchange offices, and familiarize yourself with the current exchange rates to avoid being shortchanged.

Street 'Entertainment' Scams (Low Risk) - Performers may engage you in their acts, often expecting money afterwards, especially around popular tourist attractions like the Acropolis. Enjoy the show but be mindful that participation usually comes with an unwritten expectation of tipping.

Souvenir Pricing Tricks (Low Risk) - In markets like the Monastiraki Flea Market, some vendors may inflate prices for tourists on traditional items. Always haggle to negotiate a fair price, and research average costs for specific items beforehand to avoid being overcharged.

« Local daredevils on motorbikes ride however they please, often disregarding even the slightest safety requirements and common sense! Yesterday, we encountered a couple like this. »

« Right now, there is a peaceful demonstration by farmers at Syntagma Square in Athens, protesting against oppressive taxation, with support from all layers of society. Tractors have rolled past the Parliament building, police forces are present, but there haven't been any serious clashes so far. Will there be any result from all this? »

« Statues and police, and of course, a multitude of impressions and emotions – that's my Greece... it was... I'm leaving Greece... changing countries... the last photo with the statue and the police car...)) It's bittersweet, both sad and joyful... I love and hate this feeling... Thank you, Greece, for leaving an everlasting mark in my heart and mind... )) »

« - I was especially impressed by the third floor, where everything is recreated !!! In general, taking photos is not allowed, but I slightly broke the rules :))) »

« Around 7:30 PM in the center of Athens, everything is dying down. Only refugees remain, and I found myself wandering through abandoned neighborhoods filled with ruins. There’s a palpable sense of danger that hangs in the air at night around these people. »

« Athens is a peculiar European city, and yesterday I wanted to escape from there. Everything is covered in graffiti, empty storefronts, some broken, homeless people and migrants, police and demonstrators, Eastern fragrances and Chinese lanterns. But today, we ventured into the Plaka district - a completely different story! It’s clean, pleasant, bustling with tourists and shops. For dessert – a view of the sunset from the hill (though we never actually got to see it). It’s a shame there wasn't enough time to explore the archaeological museums.  »

« The award for the most ridiculous national guard uniform goes to the Greeks! Woolen tights in a city of eternal heat, a skirt on a man symbolizing Turkish oppression, and the pompoms actually serve a practical purpose (partisans used to hide knives underneath them). The change of guard is truly something to behold! :)) »

« An unforgettable sight - the changing of the guard at the Parliament building in Athens: two-meter-tall soldiers in striking shoes with fluffy pom-poms dutifully serve under the scorching forty-degree sun, while the caring officer guides the guards on the path of righteousness! ☀️👮‍♂️ »

« The port of Athens just a couple of hours from a storm that we miraculously avoided since we set out to sea in time. And at sea, it's safer, as experienced skippers say. »

« Here's how to park... Even though there are no parking signs on both the right and left sides. »
@gexlygirl
« The Acropolis. Greeks carefully restore the damaged buildings. They number the fragments and essentially reconstruct the structures from scratch. If a piece is missing, it's replaced with a modern one, but aging the materials is strictly prohibited so that tourists can see what has been preserved from ancient times. Honestly! »
