Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Meter Trick (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis, especially at airports like Benito Juárez International, often claim their meters are broken and demand inflated flat rates ranging from $200 to $600 MXN. Always use authorized taxi stands and confirm that the meter is running before getting in.

Fake Police Encounter (Medium Risk) - Scammers posing as police officers can approach you in tourist areas like Zona Rosa, asking to check your ID and wallets for forged bills. Politely decline to cooperate and move to a crowded place or ask for real police assistance.

Street Performer Con (Medium Risk) - Street performers near popular spots like the Zócalo can create a scene asking for money after an impromptu performance, sometimes using aggressive tactics if you don’t pay. Enjoy the act, but be aware of their techniques and only give if you’re comfortable.

Shopping Scams at Markets (Medium Risk) - In local markets like La Merced, vendors may use deceptive pricing tactics, marking up items 300% or more for unwary tourists. Always negotiate prices and ask locals for a fair price reference before buying.

Counterfeit Currency (Low Risk) - In busy shopping areas like Polanco or Coyoacán, counterfeit bills can circulate, often slipping through uncareful exchanges. Familiarize yourself with the appearance of real Mexican pesos and inspect any large bills you receive before accepting them.

Restaurant Bill Inflation (Low Risk) - Some restaurants in touristy locales may present inflated bills by charging for services not rendered or extras you didn’t order. Review your bill carefully and confirm any discrepancies with the management if necessary.

Money Exchange Tricks (Low Risk) - Currency exchange booths near tourist attractions often offer poor rates and hidden commission fees. Opt for exchanges within banks or established currency exchange offices, checking rates online to ensure a fair deal.

« The classic view from my window. Today, there's either fog or smog over the city. I suspect that the tallest building in the area is on the right. In the park in the evening, there are about as many police officers as there are people strolling, so the sketchy characters behave themselves. A girl I met yesterday seriously told me that Mexico City is a city of contrasts, and it's better not to venture outside our neighborhood to avoid encountering them. »

« Night walks in one of the less fortunate cities on the planet. Honestly, the safety situation here is quite concerning. After 9 PM, respectable ladies prefer to stay home with their husbands or only go out accompanied. Of course, knowing the safe spots is essential. But even in those reliable places, you can still get attacked, have your bag snatched, or worse. The wealthy barricade themselves in closed-off neighborhoods, accessible only through a guarded checkpoint with a policeman on duty. All the fences and walls are lined with broken glass, barbed wire, or electric cables to ward off intruders. But sometimes, it’s just luck. Recently, my friend and I had a break-in, despite all the precautions. We were left shaken and with an ongoing sense of paranoia. Still, I believe in my lucky star and stroll with my kids in the evenings. Though, I do leave the camera at home ;) »

« Assigned to her district, it's marked with which area she belongs to, and there are plenty of police around... »
