Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Meter Trick (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis at airport arrivals or popular hotels may claim their meters are malfunctioning and suggest inflated flat rates instead, which can be significantly higher than the actual fare. Always use official taxi stands and ensure that the meter is running before you start your ride.

Street Performer Donation Scam (Medium Risk) - Street performers may pressure tourists for money by putting on an unexpected "show" and then aggressively asking for donations in popular areas like the Las Vegas Strip. If you want to avoid being pressured, simply walk past and do not engage.

Timeshare Presentation Scam (Medium Risk) - Tourists may be approached at hotels or busy areas offering free show tickets or meals in exchange for attending a timeshare presentation, which can become a high-pressure sales environment. Politely decline any offers that require you to attend an info session, especially if they seem too good to be true.

Casino Chip Swindle (Medium Risk) - Some individuals may approach tourists in casinos claiming they have extra chips they want to trade for cash or seeking exchanges but then vanish or give you counterfeit chips. Always be cautious and only exchange chips or cash through official casino channels.

Restaurant Menu Pricing Trick (Low Risk) - In some tourist-heavy areas, menus may display prices without mentioning additional fees for extras or tips included, leading to an unexpectedly high bill. Always ask for a full breakdown of costs before ordering, especially in cafes along the Strip.

Excessive Markup on Souvenirs (Low Risk) - Shops located near tourist attractions may sell common souvenirs at significantly inflated prices, particularly during high tourist seasons like summer. Compare prices in different shops, and consider purchasing souvenirs from less touristy areas for better deals.

Currency Exchange Rip-off (Low Risk) - Some currency exchange kiosks in tourist-centric areas may charge extremely high fees or provide poor exchange rates compared to banks. Always check the rates beforehand and prefer banks or established financial institutions for exchanges.

« "July 23, 2013 - my travel diary from Las Vegas)) Have you ever been to Monte Carlo?))) No??)) Well, I haveee!!!)) Just look at the girls welcoming you at Monte Carlo (Monte Carlo)))) So beautiful!!!) Once I learned there was this super cool disco club, I just had to hop over there!!!))) And guess what, friends??!!! They wouldn’t let me in!!! Because, according to them, I apparently wasn’t of legal age!!! I was quite upset, but they didn’t even bother to listen, repeating: “Miss, show us your ID!”)) I wasn’t about to run back to my hotel for my ID, so I just threatened, “I'll be back!!!”))) Made them laugh, but they still didn’t let me in(( oh well, I came back the next day, just like I promised))) By the way, about clubs, I can say a few words - it’s just like in the movies))) No age restrictions at all, everyone’s dancing on the floor - young and old, as they say)) but they only let in those who are of legal age, which really wore me out after this story, I had to carry my ID with me!))) Security is at least two meters tall)) They look you over like you’re the enemy of the state, but once they check your ID, they instantly smile with their big white grins and swing open the massive doors for you))) The music is pumping everywhere, non-stop, they had to drag me off the dance floor because it was soooo cool!!! no fights, no harassment, freedom of action, freedom of danceeee))) it’s a blast!!! So, big thumbs up for American disco clubs)) July 25, 2015 x ja" »
