Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Fare Scam (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis and ride shares may offer rides from LAX or popular areas at inflated rates without using a meter, especially at night. Always use authorized taxi stands or reputable ride-hailing apps and confirm fares before getting in.

Hollywood Walk of Fame Pictures (Medium Risk) - Street performers, often dressed as celebrities, may demand payment for taking photos with them on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Politely decline if they approach you and always be cautious of giving money or engaging without prior agreement.

Street Charity Scam (Medium Risk) - On busy streets, individuals with clipboards are sometimes seen soliciting donations for fake charities, particularly in tourist-heavy areas like Santa Monica Pier. Politely refuse to engage and do not provide any personal information or donations without verification.

Shopping "Deals" (Medium Risk) - Street vendors in areas like Venice Beach may sell counterfeit or low-quality goods marketed as authentic, claiming they are great deals. Research prices for authentic items beforehand and only shop in legitimate stores to avoid low-quality purchases.

Currency Exchange Trick (Low Risk) - Some currency exchange booths offer subpar rates or hidden fees, particularly in tourist areas such as Downtown LA. Use official exchange services or ATM withdrawals instead, and be sure to compare rates beforehand to get the best deal.

Dining Bill Surprise (Low Risk) - In some tourist-heavy restaurants, prices may not include taxes and tips, leading to a surprising total on the bill. Always check menus for stated prices and clarify details before ordering to avoid unexpected costs, especially in areas like Hollywood.

Complimentary Item Scam (Low Risk) - Some cafes, particularly in tourist spots like Melrose Avenue, may offer complimentary items but then include them on the bill. Always ask if items are indeed free and verify prices before ordering to avoid hidden charges.

« Los Angeles, the city of sins, known to us from countless movies, TV shows, the Oscars, and the world-famous district of Hollywood.

It was disappointing... There are more homeless people than I expected, sleeping on the streets in tents or even setting up entire camps right under the freeway overpasses.

On the streets, marijuana is being smoked, as it’s legal here with a doctor’s permission, which can be obtained for just $50 (a bit sketchy).

The right angles and clever marketing make this place seem desirable to live in, but for me, it doesn't hold any real value at first glance. »

« Did you know that... in one of the police stations in Los Angeles, there is a special "cat patrol"? Their main job is to catch rats. »

« A typical scene for Los Angeles—Spiderman got caught by the cops. By the way, Spiderman is not the same anymore. He’s put on some weight and couldn’t climb up the web to escape from the police. 🕷️🚓 »

« The Los Angeles City Hall offers a free observation deck for city views. You pass through security (they didn’t even check our IDs), get a visitor sticker, then take two elevators to the top floor where you can experience a 360° view of one of America's most famous cities. You feel a mix of awe and humility as you pass by the outrageously luxurious homes of Beverly Hills, all while enjoying the freedom to stroll through the hallways of the city hall. Before stepping onto the observation deck, you might indulge in some playful thoughts: "As the Mayor of LA, I declare...". The vibe is definitely there! 😄🏙️ »

« Hollywood.. A photo with the local police officers. I feel like I’m on a movie set. 😊 And they feel at least like Johnny Depps. »

« I don’t know why, but I love taking photos of police cars in different places I visit. Maybe it’s because many of my relatives have worked or still work in the police. Here’s a classic police Ford in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. The color scheme is well-known from many movies, but in reality, the color patterns can vary significantly between states. For instance, in New York or Alaska, police cars are painted quite differently. »

« A police officer was driving along the beach. He saw a bottle – stopped, picked it up, put it in his car, and drove off. Level up! »
