Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For
Gem Scam (High Risk) - Tourists may be approached by friendly locals who suggest a visit to a "government-approved" gem shop, often near popular tourist attractions like the Grand Palace. Avoid this by firmly declining unsolicited offers and sticking to well-known shops or those recommended by trusted sources.
Tuk-Tuk Tour Scam (Medium Risk) - Unofficial tuk-tuk drivers offer tourists cheap all-day tours but take them to specific shops where they receive commissions for bringing customers, usually around Khao San Road. Use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps instead, and negotiate a fare before getting in.
Fake Guide Scam (Medium Risk) - Individuals posing as licensed tour guides approach tourists outside major landmarks like Wat Pho and offer unofficial tours at inflated prices. Always ensure your guide is officially registered and book tours through reputable agencies.
Money Exchange Trick (Medium Risk) - Some money exchange booths, often near popular tourist areas, may offer "better rates" but then charge hidden fees or provide counterfeit bills. Always use licensed money changers with visible rates and count your money before leaving the counter.
Street Food Overcharging (Low Risk) - In busy markets like Chatuchak, some vendors may charge inflated prices for food by not displaying prices clearly or claiming special ingredients. Be aware of typical dish prices, and ask for the cost before ordering to avoid surprises.
Counterfeit Goods (Low Risk) - Markets like Patpong may sell counterfeit items, including designer brands, often at cheap prices. To avoid legal issues and disappointment, refrain from purchasing high-value brand items unless from a legitimate source.
Fake Charity Scam (Low Risk) - During high tourist seasons, individuals may solicit donations for non-existing charities, especially around tourist spots like Lumphini Park. Verify any charitable organizations before donating and consider contributing directly to established charities.
« Visiting card of Thailand - The Grand Palace (entrance fee 15 USD). This is the most popular and recognizable attraction in Bangkok. Be careful, as on the way to the palace, you might be approached by vendors who will tell you that the palace is closed or that you can't dress properly (they don’t rent out clothing). While you are standing there confused, a colleague of theirs might suggest alternative sightseeing options (like a boat ride or a visit to the market). You can confidently ignore them and enjoy the beauty of the palace. Keep in mind that the Grand Palace allows entry until 3:00 PM.
« Traffic is on the right side + almost no driving rules )))) A green light doesn't guarantee that you'll be let through at a crosswalk, and you might still get honked at. Riding a scooter on the sidewalk is totally normal. But smoking in prohibited areas? That's when they start handing out fines. 🚦🚴♂️ »
« A couple of tuk-tuk drivers tried to scam us today, saying that the Grand Palace was closed and offering to take us to three attractions for 20 baht, plus a stop at a jewelry store. It seems like there are a lot of scammers around, especially in the center. After 30 minutes, a guy who claimed to be an Italian of Thai descent approached us and said the Grand Palace was also closed, but would open in an hour. He suggested we spend that hour on a fabulous boat tour along the rivers, charging 2000 baht per person, but he was so kind to offer it for only 1500 baht per person. However, I discovered that these tours can actually be found for as low as 1000 baht for two, if you just haggle a bit, since they always try to convince you that it’s "very expensive" and "my money is in a hotel." And just so you know, a ferry ride along the canals costs from 10 baht (for comparison). »
« Driving at 2 AM, you can encounter all sorts on the road – a terrifying accident, a pickup truck loaded with barrels of diesel, a tight police checkpoint. Out of all the traffic, why was I the only one stopped? I just wanted to show off a beautiful picture! 😊 »
« Bangkok is dangerous, damn it! A tourist goes missing without a trace every couple of days! But still, my desire won over. I don't regret it – it's a huge, fascinating Eastern city. »
« Last night in Bangkok was a blast, totally living up to the genre's best traditions. I even managed to DJ for an hour on Khaosan Road before the police shut the party down! 🎉😅 »
« Bangkok, Thailand | So here's the situation: for over three months now, the opposition has been occupying the central streets and administrative buildings of the capital. Almost every major intersection is filled with demonstrators, their tents, trucks, and pickups with people, stages for rallies where someone is almost always speaking, singing, or strumming a guitar. The city is under a state of emergency, opposition leaders are being arrested, and clashes with the police are happening. In the photo, you can see one of the central streets, with a canopy in the background where people have gathered, surrounded by a bunch of tents next to a large shopping center that is operating as usual, although security checks have been set up at the entrance, and behind it all - a stage with musicians. »
« We cruised through the canals of Bangkok. This is like the local marine or, umm... canal police. The water traffic is, wow, intense! They zoom past at high speeds in narrow, crowded areas. The waves they create are something else. The boats sway all over the place. But the scariest part is the local water taxi! 🚤💦 »

To intimidate drivers and ensure better adherence to rules, they’ve placed statues of police officers around Bangkok ^^ »
