Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Metro Ticket Scam (High Risk) - Some individuals offer to sell you metro tickets at a lower price near Brussels Central Station or Schuman Station. These tickets are often either counterfeit or invalid, leaving you without a way to legally travel. To avoid this, always purchase tickets from official machines or authorized vendors.

Taxi Overcharging (Medium Risk) - Unofficial taxis may approach you at main tourist attractions like the Grand Place, claiming they offer better rates. They often either charge inflated prices or refuse to use meters. Only take licensed taxis from official stands, and make sure to confirm the fare before starting your journey.

Street Performer Trick (Medium Risk) - Street performers in areas like the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert may solicit donations aggressively or use distracting performances to pickpocket unaware tourists. To protect yourself, keep your belongings secure and be wary of large crowds gathered around performers.

Phony Charity Collectors (Medium Risk) - Charitable solicitors often appear in busy areas such as Place du Luxembourg, asking for donations with fake credentials. These collectors may create a sense of urgency or guilt to extract money. Politely decline and only donate to registered charities you have researched.

Restaurant Menu Deception (Low Risk) - Some cafés may display enticing menus outside but serve overpriced or lower-quality food than advertised once seated. Check recent reviews or use local apps to cross-verify quality and pricing before dining. Avoid restaurants with empty tables during peak hours, as it can indicate poor service or unappetizing food.

Currency Exchange Scams (Low Risk) - In tourist areas like the Brussels Airport, unofficial currency exchange offices may offer poor rates and hidden fees. Always exchange currency at official banks or ATMs, where the rates will be more favorable, and inquire about all transaction fees beforehand.

« The Europlaza is 90% comprised of people from southern and eastern backgrounds, making it a vibrant melting pot. The security here is impressive, with police presence, special forces, and concrete barricades adding a sense of safety.

To my surprise, it boasts the most beautiful central square in Europe! 🌍✨ »

« It's no surprise that Brussels has reached the highest level of danger right now😐 I remember walking late at night from the train station to our hotel through the deserted streets with a huge sense of fear! It was only a 15-minute walk, so we decided not to take a taxi, but throughout the whole way, I was praying that no one would suddenly appear from around the next corner😨 It's better not to describe the consequences of such a meeting😐 Only after the hotel door closed behind us did I take a breath of relief☺ A creepy city in that regard, but beautiful! »

« In Brussels, a powerful explosion was heard in the area of a police operation. Witnesses reported that the sound traveled far beyond the secured perimeter. Additionally, police advanced deeper into the cordoned-off neighborhood, with snipers moving across rooftops. Earlier, Brussels police had blocked off the street adjacent to the European Quarter due to a suspicious suitcase found in a car with French license plates. Military explosives experts were called to the scene to open the suitcase, but no explosives were found inside. It's worth noting that the blocked-off Joseph II Street is known for its many restaurants, often frequented by employees and visitors of European Union institutions. »

« Despite the obvious architectural beauty of Belgium, this country didn't quite win me over. Even the famous Belgian chocolate didn't taste that great to me! Plus, I found the streets to be unsafe in the evening! »

« Dynamo fans arrived in Brussels for the match against Anderlecht. The police escorted nearly 400 people to the metro. Everything is very civil. For now :) »

« Brussels is quite a strange city. Yesterday, on my way back from a restaurant, we nearly witnessed a knife fight. There was blood everywhere and all that. Today, I saw police dragging a teenager in handcuffs. »

« Such an amazing city, but at the same time really dangerous! We were almost robbed at every turn. Someone punctured our car tire and we had to spend 5 hours looking for help. It's like everyone's phone died at once and everyone was asking us to use our phone to call!👹👹👹 »
