Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

U-Bahn Ticket Scams (High Risk) - Some individuals may approach you in U-Bahn stations, claiming they need to buy a ticket and offering to sell you one for a lower price. Always buy your tickets from automatic machines or ticket counters, and never engage with anyone selling tickets in the station.

Taxi Flat Rate Trick (Medium Risk) - Unofficial taxi drivers at major tourist points, like Alexanderplatz, may initially show a lower fare but later attempt to charge a flat rate that is much higher. Use only official taxi ranks and verify that the meter is running before starting the trip.

Fake Charity Collectors (Medium Risk) - Groups may approach tourists in busy areas like Potsdamer Platz, claiming to be raising money for local charities, but pocket the donations instead. Politely decline to donate and avoid engaging with them.

Restaurant Menu Upselling (Medium Risk) - Some cafés and restaurants in areas like Kreuzberg may bring extra items that aren’t ordered, leading to inflated bills. Always confirm what items are included and ask for prices before ordering anything not listed.

Money Exchange Scams (Medium Risk) - Currency exchange booths, particularly around tourist hotspots, may offer attractive rates but charge high service fees or provide counterfeit notes. Use reputable banks or exchange services and familiarize yourself with the current exchange rates.

ATM Card Skimming (Low Risk) - Some ATMs, especially in less busy areas, can be rigged to steal card information. Use machines located within bank branches and regularly monitor your bank statements for suspicious activity.

“Street Performers” Asking for Donations (Low Risk) - In popular tourist areas like Brandenburg Gate, performers may perform and then demand payment once they finish, often making tourists feel obligated. Enjoy the performance but be wary of unsolicited requests for donations.

« Berlin is getting ready for the freeDadin rally, handing out flyers to passersby. The police didn't even bother checking them. Democracy 😊 »

« This is Berlin too, and right in the center: we accidentally stumbled under a bridge, and there it was, a literal dump – a shelter for homeless people with all the accompanying elements. Just around the corner, 2 meters away, there's a police station. Bundespolizei, federal police, that is. Wow. »

« In Berlin, the fine for graffiti can reach up to $5,400 per person. Wall drawings are considered to be severe forms of vandalism, and any passerby can easily call the police upon witnessing artists at work. In the squatter area of Kreuzberg, patrols are almost always on duty and respond immediately to calls. Amazing artworks, similar to this one, are created in just a few minutes by a group of 3-4 people, each highlighting their own line and only their own section of the "canvas." Many graffiti are covered up by the next morning, but some remain untouched even by authorities - the line between an act of vandalism and a work of art can sometimes be very thin. »

« Together, we closed down the operation of migrant swindlers in central Berlin. These individuals pretended to be deaf-mute and deceived vulnerable tourists into giving them money. They claimed to collect funds for a training center for the hearing impaired, but first of all, they weren't deaf, and secondly, such centers exist all over Europe. As my girlfriend and I walked by, they approached us asking to sign a petition and help raise money for disabled people. I almost fell for it, but when they refused a €5 bill and started asking for more, it hit us. We quickly contacted the police and reported these scammers. I can't stand the fact that some people, who live in one of the best countries in the world and receive state benefits, still engage in such deceitful activities. »

« In Alex, whatever they come up with ends up being dirty, smelly, full of drunks and beggars. But sometimes the musicians are okay. »

« Metro. Berlin While we were figuring out the ins and outs of the Berlin metro, a girl gave us her tickets, not giving us a chance to thank her. On the way back, we rode without tickets. Back then we didn’t know what fines awaited for such actions 😁 »

« Our car barely got 3500 km down the road when it was suddenly blocked by the police in Berlin. Something happened in the neighboring building. »

« This is Berlin: on the left, there are prohibitory signs in the subway, and on the right, someone has stuck a fifth alternative one. »

« Heading home..
Poor, unfortunate Ullrich supermarket behind me has to put up with the local homeless people hanging around Zoologischer Garten every day. No matter how much you clean the floors or air it out, it really takes a toll on the image. And you can't just kick them out, it's a tolerant society after all..)) »

« There are local cops present at the hostel, over 20 vans with police squads surrounding the area, and a helicopter circling above. A protest is set to happen just a 15-minute walk from the hostel, and disturbances are expected! We're waiting for some bread and circuses. »
@s0k0l0va
« During our 4 days in Berlin, we already witnessed two protests! 😊 The young antifascists were rallying against a march from a party advocating for immigration restrictions. Both sides met at an intersection, shouted, clapped, and then went their separate ways! ✌️ »

« The first Berlin TV tower (initially served as a radio tower, later for TV, and now it operates solely on police frequencies). »
