Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For
Fake Petition Scams (High Risk) - Scammers, often found near popular tourist spots like the Frauenkirche or Neumarkt, approach tourists with fake petitions, claiming to support a charitable cause. Politely refuse to sign or give money, as they often distract you while an accomplice steals your belongings.
Public Transport Ticket Checks (Medium Risk) - In the tram system, particularly around the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), con artists may pose as ticket inspectors and demand payment for alleged ticket violations. Always validate your ticket at machines and keep it accessible; genuine inspectors are in official uniform and will not ask for cash on the street.
Menu Switcheroo (Medium Risk) - Some restaurants in tourist-heavy areas may present a menu in German and charge inflated prices on the English menu after you order. Always ask for the prices upfront and review the menu carefully before ordering to avoid unpleasant surprises on your bill.
Currency Exchange Scams (Medium Risk) - Currency exchange kiosks in crowded areas like Altmarkt may offer attractive rates but hit you with hidden fees. Use reputable banks or official exchange services, and always count your money before leaving the counter.
Fake Street Performers (Low Risk) - In tourist areas such as the Brühl's Terrace, you might encounter street performers who request payment after performing. Alternatively, they may shake your hand and leave you with an unwanted "gift" while expecting payment. Enjoy the performance, but be wary of unsolicited gifts and avoid giving money unless you choose to.
Counterfeit Souvenirs (Low Risk) - While shopping at local markets like the Striezelmarkt during the holiday season, be cautious of low-quality knock-offs being sold as authentic crafts. Inspect items closely and purchase from reputable vendors to ensure you're getting genuine products.
« I have very warm memories of Dresden; we felt cozy there.
And for some reason, that's where we had a real problem - my husband had his phone stolen. Who would have thought, right? It happened on a sightseeing bus. We likely left the phone on the seat or it fell out of his pocket; it doesn't matter now. We realized it was missing after we got off the bus. According to the staff of the tour company that owned the bus, one of the passengers found the phone and told the driver he would take it to the lost and found. My outrage was limitless, of course - how could the driver give the found item to a passenger?
There was a whole saga of trying to send messages asking for the phone back, searching for the lost and found (which does exist!!!!), and so on. Of course, we never found the phone. What surprised me the most was the complete indifference of the staff and their unwillingness to help tourists...
The start of our vacation was marred, but despite that, on our way back, we happily visited Dresden once more. It’s beautiful, delicious, and cozy there ❤️ »
