Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Ticket Reseller Scam (High Risk) - In areas around Munich's main tourist spots like Marienplatz or Hauptbahnhof, individuals may pose as ticket resellers, offering concert or event tickets at inflated prices. Always purchase tickets from official venues or authorized outlets to avoid scams.

Taxi Meter Trick (Medium Risk) - Unofficial taxis operating near airports or major train stations sometimes claim the meter is broken and charge a flat fee that is significantly higher. Only use taxis from official stands and ensure the meter is in operation before starting your ride.

Restaurant Bill Trick (Medium Risk) - Some restaurants in tourist-heavy areas may present bills including unrequested extras or service charges, especially in restaurants near Viktualienmarkt. Always inquire about prices before ordering and check the bill carefully to avoid surprises.

Street Performer Donation Scam (Medium Risk) - In busy areas like Odeonsplatz, performers may create an aggressive atmosphere and pressure you for donations. Enjoy the performances but be discreet and avoid engaging financially unless you genuinely wish to support them.

Fake Charity Collector (Low Risk) - Occasionally, individuals may approach tourists near popular sites like the English Garden, claiming to support a charity. Politely decline to donate unless the charity can provide clear documentation, as it may be a ruse.

Currency Exchange Scams (Low Risk) - Some currency exchange booths, particularly in tourist areas or at the airport, may offer unfavorable exchange rates and hidden fees. Use bank ATMs or exchange services with transparent rates to avoid losing money.

Souvenir Price Tricks (Low Risk) - Certain shops near tourist spots in the Altstadt may inflate prices or offer "special deals" during peak season. Always compare prices and shop around before purchasing, as prices can vary significantly.

« What a long, long day, but the walk around Munich was definitely worth it. As a bonus, there was a demonstration going on... I’m not entirely sure what it was about, but the local police, who were definitely everywhere today, assured me that everything was calm and safe. Another nice bonus was the weekly Saturday market filled with all sorts of tasty treats! 😊 »

« I'm heading to the bus stop. All the sidewalks are supposed to be cleared by 7 AM, otherwise there's a fine ;) Nobody wants that fine, so they haven't cleared the cars, just the sidewalks, haha! »

« I went to Oktoberfest for the first time. The concentration of people per square meter is off the charts, and many of the giant tents were closed because they were overflowing. I love big celebrations, but it was genuinely a bit dangerous. »

« Munich. Transport Museum. Let's see what this sign prohibits. »

« Amazing view, incredibly cool lighting, a cute pink entrance, a huge green Christmas tree, and all of this is... the Munich Police Building! 😍🎄✨ »

« Germany. Munich. Mounted police. I haven't seen anything like that in the cities I've lived in before. 😊 »

« New Year's Eve! An unreal number of fireworks! Just an enormous amount. They are shooting them off everywhere and in every direction, with ambulances driving around because some people are getting hit. I felt like I was in a beautiful war, it was terrifying! We couldn't stay long in the square, it was beautiful, of course, but dangerous. »

« I attended Oktoberfest in Munich for the first time yesterday. Impressions: great organization, a very calm and friendly crowd, a huge area, and surprisingly little police presence considering the number of people. It’s so much fun in the tents where the good bands play... I have many impressions, but one interesting feeling is that I feel like I’ve seen all this before. What I liked the most was that in the subway after the festival, there are polite staff standing by every door of every carriage, helping everyone who’s a little tipsy to get on board. They’re also at the escalators to ensure everything is safe... They’ve really nailed it; it’s well organized – they’ve learned a lot in 200 years of the festival. Just thinking about our police after events, yelling at people to go in a specific direction, makes me shudder. »
