What to Try in Belgrade

Must-try Dishes
Prebranac - Baked beans - Savory layers of white beans, onions, and smoked paprika slow-cooked to a flavorful finish. This hearty dish is usually enjoyed as a comforting lunch or dinner, often paired with fresh bread.

Ćevapi - Grilled minced meat - Mini sausages made of a mix of beef and lamb, seasoned and grilled to perfection. Locals often savor them at casual gatherings, typically served with chopped onions and sour cream in a soft lepinja bread.

Ajvar - Pepper spread - A thick sauce made from roasted red peppers, eggplant, and garlic, often enjoyed as a side dish or condiment. It's a popular addition to meals throughout the year, particularly during summer barbecues with friends and family.

Pasulj - Bean soup - A robust soup made from white beans, smoked meats, and spices, simmered until rich and hearty. Belgrade locals often serve it at family gatherings, especially during colder months for a filling dinner.

Proja - Cornbread - A dense and slightly sweet cornbread made from cornmeal, sometimes mixed with cheese or greens for extra flavor. You'll find it as a typical breakfast dish or snack alongside stews; I recommend enjoying it fresh out of the oven when possible!

Pečenica - Roasted pork belly - Crispy and tender strips of roasted pork belly, seasoned and slow-cooked until golden. This local specialty is a celebratory dish often served at festive occasions, usually accompanied by homemade pickles.

Kafanska Pita - Savory pie - A delicious pie filled with cheese, spinach, or potatoes, wrapped in flaky dough and baked until golden brown. You’ll find locals enjoying it during casual lunches, often paired with yogurt for a refreshing touch.

Čorba od bundeve - Pumpkin soup (seasonal) - Silky smooth soup made from pumpkin and spices, perfect for fall. It’s a favorite warming dish on chilly days, and locals often gather to enjoy it at harvest festivals, served hot with crusty bread.

Desserts & Drinks
Raki - Ракija (fruit brandy) - A potent distilled spirit, typically made from plums or grapes, often enjoyed ice-cold in small shots. Traditionally shared during gatherings, locals will sip it alongside appetizers, celebrating friendships and storytelling.

Kafa - Кава (Turkish coffee) - Thick and strong coffee brewed in a cezve, served unfiltered with grounds settling at the bottom. East Europeans usually enjoy their coffee in the morning or after meals, often accompanied by a sugar cube or two (but don't stir!).

Malina - Малине (raspberry juice) - A refreshing cold drink made from blended fresh raspberries and water, usually sweetened to taste. It’s especially popular in hot summer days and can be a delightful choice at street markets, where it perfectly accompanies a warm pastry.

Palačinke - Палачинке (crepes) - Thin pancakes often filled with various delights like Nutella, jam, or walnuts, served hot off the skillet. A staple at family gatherings, you’ll find them in many cafes or street corners, commonly ordered as a sweet snack (but ordering “palačinke” in the plural is the typical mistake).

Slatko - Слатко (sweet preserves) - A thick, fruity preserve made from seasonal fruits, usually served in a small dish with a spoon, often as a gesture of hospitality to guests. It’s especially prominent during celebrations, such as weddings, where it symbolizes sweetness and good fortune for the newlyweds.

Overview of Cuisine and Specialties

The first thing that hits you about Belgrade's food prices is how affordable dining can be, especially compared to Western Europe. Just yesterday, I had a hearty lunch at a quaint spot in Vračar and paid only 1,200 dinars for a generous plate of ćevapi with fresh somun and a refreshing yogurt drink. In the same neighborhood, you could spend 2,500 dinars at a fancier place for a similar meal, but it's all about the atmosphere you seek (plus, the latter probably comes with a view of the Church of Saint Sava).

Forget everything you know about lunch hours. Here, the lunch rush starts around 1 PM and extends well into the afternoon, with many locals preferring to have their coffee break around 4 PM. Unlike the rushed meals of typical European cities, Belgradians savor their food, often lingering at tables to continue conversations long after the plates are cleared. So, don’t be alarmed if you see diners settling in for a couple of hours — it’s the norm!

Oh, and before I forget, Belgrade's payment customs can be a bit bewildering for newcomers. Many local restaurants operate on a cash-only basis. When I first dined out, I was surprised to find out that it wasn't until I’d dug into my food that I learned this tidbit. Most places hand over the bill at the table upon request, and you’ll want to slip the cash directly to the server instead of placing it on the table. It can feel a tad awkward at first, but it's just part of the local dining culture.

Tipping norms are pretty relaxed but appreciated. Generally, rounding up or adding around 10% is considered generous. So, if your meal totaled 1,800 dinars, tossing in a 200 dinar tip would surely bring a smile to the waiter’s face.

One common tourist mistake I often see is people trying to cram too many meals into a short visit. Take the time to explore just one or two areas deeply instead of darting all over the city. Kalemegdan and Skadarlija are popular dining areas that truly reflect the city's charm, and both have a mix of vibrant food choices. You could spend an entire afternoon in Skadarlija just enjoying the street food while soaking in the atmosphere.

As autumn approaches, the food scene in Belgrade starts shifting toward heartier dishes like sarma and on the griller favorites such as pečenica. The transition in seasonal produce means a wonderful array of flavors in dishes you won't find during the summer.

Plan your dining experiences well; reserving a spot at popular restaurants during busy hours — particularly the weekends — can save you some disappointment later on. After all, experiencing local food culture is about the joy of savoring every bite at your own leisurely pace, so embrace the rhythm of Belgrade and allow its culinary delights to pull you in!

« Good morning! ;) Honestly, the internet here isn’t the easiest to deal with, so we’re looking for spots with Wi-Fi and settling in there for a snack, during which I spam your feed))) And judging by how huge the desserts are and how low the prices are, I can see how someone could easily gain a few pounds here! »

« Dinner in Belgrade, dishes cost no more than $5. »

« Yesterday, we visited the first of the planned craft beer bars in Belgrade, "Samo Pivo!". Inside, it's spacious with a super simple interior, packed with people, especially closer to the evening. They always have 21 taps, mixing local craft with mass market options, and there’s also an impressive bottled menu spanning 5 pages. I've honestly never seen many of the options elsewhere; the selection is fantastic. The best part is they serve everything in 0.33 or 0.5 liters at an average price of $0.60-$0.80 for 0.5 liters. All foreign beers are priced around $1.00-$1.20 for 0.33 liters, including some rarities! I highly recommend checking it out if you're in Belgrade. »

« This delicious chicken with bacon costs only 650 dinars, which is about $45. :) »

« This is the quintessence of tastiness! The steak didn’t even come close. I’ve never enjoyed food this much, and the best part is, the pljeskavica costs less than $1. Belgrade has won me over! »

« Here are the prices in some of the not-so-trendy bars in Belgrade. To get an approximate idea in dollars, you can halve the amount. »
@koshkared
« By the way, I forgot to share the prices for "forbidden snacks" in Belgrade. Just divide the price by 2 - that gives you the amount in dollars. The board size is quite decent. Sigh! »
@le_eklera
« In Belgrade, there are many wonderful things, including French macaroons ✌️ I really loved the mint-cocoa combination, the green-brown one, and lavender. The price is similar to what you'd find here, about $0.65 each. »

« Our lunch at the Souvenir restaurant by the Sava River was 18 euros. We had fish soup and veal, Greek salad, and cevapi, I can't recall everything (something traditional Serbian). As always, it was a lot, delicious, and affordable :) »

« We arrived yesterday afternoon in the capital of Serbia - Belgrade. Honestly, I don’t understand why people praise this city. We strolled through the central walking streets, which lack any real charm. Restaurant prices are quite expensive; for example, a Heineken is around $1.10. We didn’t see any interesting architecture, and we didn’t even feel like walking around, so we headed home to rest. I hope my opinion changes today. »

« Gigantic! It’s 180 dinars, which is about $1.25 for 1 kg. »

« The food is incredibly delicious in all the restaurants we've visited, outstanding cuisine and service. In this establishment, the prices are very low. The most delicious dish is the gourmet pljeskavica. »
@olgusenok
« I haven't been able to find a decent Wi-Fi here, so while I'm still searching, I'll share all the updates at once) This is our first snack) Belgrade is amazing with its many bakeries) The prices here are incredible, everything is very cheap) »
@olgusenok
« Regarding prices: at a restaurant with local flair in the city center, complete with live music and dishes crafted by the chef, we paid $10 for everything! Even in our small town, those prices are unheard of. And this is in the capital! Of course, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was lively! 🎶😊 »
