Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Meter Trick (High Risk) - Unofficial taxi drivers often claim their meters are broken and demand flat rates that are significantly higher, especially around airport terminals and popular tourist attractions like Skadarlija. Always use licensed taxis, identifiable by their yellow color, and insist on using the meter to avoid inflated charges.

Fake Charity Scam (Medium Risk) - In areas like Republic Square, individuals may approach tourists claiming to raise money for a local charity or cause. These individuals may pressure you for donations using manipulative tactics. Politely decline to contribute and avoid engaging with them.

Street Performers and "Helpers" (Medium Risk) - Street performers in busy locations such as Knez Mihailova may distract you while an accomplice attempts to pickpocket or steal personal items. Stay aware of your surroundings and keep bags and valuables secured and in front of you.

Currency Exchange Tricks (Medium Risk) - In tourist-heavy areas like the Kalemegdan Fortress, some money exchange kiosks might offer attractive rates with hidden fees or unfavorable conversion rates. Always check multiple exchange rates and choose reputable kiosks, preferably those linked to banks.

Restaurant Bill Shock (Low Risk) - Some cafés and restaurants, particularly in the Old Town, might add unlisted charges, such as service fees, which can be surprising on the final bill. Always ask for a menu with prices and inquire about any additional charges before ordering.

Fake Vintage Goods Scam (Low Risk) - At markets such as Đeram, sellers may offer items claiming to be authentic vintage or antique, often at inflated prices. Research typical market rates beforehand and shop only from reputable vendors.

Transport Ticket Scams (Low Risk) - Occasionally, individuals near public transport stations like the Main Bus Station may sell invalid tickets to tourists. Purchase tickets directly from authorized machines or booths to ensure legitimacy and avoid unwanted fines during ticket inspections.

« 40 meters from the stadium, with beer and the Serbian police ;) you could say this is unprecedented freedom for us!)) »

« It's time to share about Belgrade, Serbia! If you ever have a layover in Serbia, make sure to step out into the city! You’ll be greeted by friendly people, a unique city, and delicious pastries. The feeling of euphoria will last for about 4 hours, which is enough time to explore Belgrade and see all its main attractions))) There's really no point in coming here for an extended holiday, but a few hours to get to know a new city is more than enough! Prices are reasonable, the locals are warm and welcoming, and they will definitely help you out, but remember to stay safe and keep your belongings close! Like in many places, some might try to take advantage, so just be mindful))) Have a great time, and we are heading back now!))) »

« The partially destroyed buildings from the American bombings leave a strong impression. In my opinion, it's a right move! Leaving them as they are serves as a reminder for ourselves and future generations. So that we always remember which side of the street poses the most danger during bombings and who created and continues to create that danger... »

« The remnants of NATO aggression are still visible in Belgrade to this day. It's quite eerie. »
