Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Pigeon Drop Scam (High Risk) - Typically occurring in crowded tourist areas such as La Rambla, this scam involves a stranger asking for help to 'find' a bag of money, convincing you to contribute to 'keep it safe.' To avoid it, be wary of overly friendly strangers and do not engage in discussions about money in public places.

Pickpocketing (High Risk) - Commonly happening in busy areas like the Gothic Quarter and popular attractions, thieves often work in pairs, one distracting while the other steals from your bag or pocket. Keep valuable items secure and use anti-theft bags while remaining vigilant in crowded spaces.

Taxi Fare Discrepancy (Medium Risk) - At the airport or major train stations, some unlicensed taxis may charge inflated, flat rates instead of using the meter. Always opt for official taxis at designated stands and confirm the meter is on before you start your journey.

Fake Ticket Sales (Medium Risk) - You might encounter individuals claiming to sell fake tickets to attractions or public transport outside places like the Sagrada Familia. Purchase tickets only from official vendors or trusted websites to avoid being scammed.

Restaurant Menu Tricks (Medium Risk) - It’s not uncommon for restaurants in tourist-heavy areas like Barceloneta to present a 'tourist menu' that appears more affordable, but then charge extra for drinks or items not included. Always ask for the total price for specific items and look for reviews of the place before eating.

Money Exchange Scams (Medium Risk) - Near tourist sites such as Park Güell, some exchange booths may offer poor rates or hidden fees. Use authorized exchange offices, avoid street vendors, and if possible, withdraw cash directly from ATMs to receive a fairer rate.

Friendship Bracelets Scam (Low Risk) - In the Barceloneta area, individuals may approach you to tie a bracelet on your wrist ‘for free’ but then demand payment afterward. Politely refuse if someone insists on giving you something without asking or tries to engage with you aggressively about it.

« It's all about the backyard – I’m making collages while waiting for the subway train. Today there’s a strike, everything is moving so slowly. »

« In the touristy streets of Barcelona, there are many pickpockets, so it's important to keep an eye on your valuables or even get a tattoo of a third eye... 😅 »

« Nightmare for a Barcelona fan. Playing football is forbidden! ;-). »

« The Barcelona "Magic Fountain" is a questionable experience. It’s a tourist frenzy, a paradise for pickpockets, poor sound quality, and a strange repertoire. It all kicks off with Montserrat Caballé and Freddie Mercury. According to seasoned visitors, the opening song hasn’t changed in over a decade. But now the fountain's playlist includes artists like Miley Cyrus. Still, I think it's better in Tsaritsyno! »

« For several years now, bullfighting has been banned in Catalonia. The last fight took place at the "Monumental" arena in September 2011. Now, there's a bullfighting museum here, and visitors are allowed to explore the arena and the stands, even sit in the presidential box. 🐂✨ »

« While we were sitting and eating burgers, rowdy Englishmen caused a ruckus and a fight in the neighboring Irish pub. Interestingly, the police arrived exactly one minute later! »

« The Spanish police are a sight to behold. They're all quite handsome, each one better than the last. 😄 »
