Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Airport Taxi Scam (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis at Frankfurt Airport may offer rides at inflated flat rates, particularly around Terminal 1. To avoid this scam, always use official taxi ranks and ensure the driver uses a working meter.

Money Change Racket (Medium Risk) - Some currency exchange booths, especially in popular tourist areas like the Römer, advertise good rates but charge steep hidden fees or provide incorrect amounts. Stick to bank-affiliated currency exchanges and double-check the rate displayed before making any transactions.

Train Ticket Con (Medium Risk) - Scammers may approach travelers at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, pretending to be ticket inspectors, demanding to see tickets and asking for payment of fines for 'illegal travel.' Always keep your original ticket on hand and show it when asked; don't pay anyone who isn't in an official uniform or lacks an official ID.

Distracting "Charity" Collectors (Medium Risk) - You might encounter people asking for donations while creating a distraction or even attempting to take belongings from your person in places like Kleinmarkthalle. Politely decline and move away if you feel uncomfortable or if someone is too persistent.

Street Preview Scam (Low Risk) - Occasionally, performers in popular spots like Paulsplatz will solicit donations after a short act; they may make it seem as if the performance was tailored for you. Enjoy the act but be cautious of excessive requests for money afterward—feel free to leave if pressured.

Fake Market Goods (Low Risk) - In certain markets, such as the Frankfurt Market in winter, vendors may sell counterfeit items disguised as local products. Always verify the authenticity of artisanal goods and avoid making purchases from vendors without proper licensing or receipts.

« Frankfurt in a nutshell: not much to say. A typical, faceless German city. You have to search for Germans among the crowds of Arabs, Turks, Poles, and Romanians. I witnessed an interesting scene: a bunch of police cars flew by with their sirens blaring, and immediately all the white people looked terrified while the black people seemed joyful. Such a cheerful and tolerant Europe!)) »

« We explored many alleys of Frankfurt, both central and not... And I can confidently say that it's a clean, safe, and comfortable city for walking! There are police everywhere, patrolling and checking on people. The city is full of people in suits; they're not just bankers but also taxi drivers, all well-dressed 🎩💪🏼 »
