Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Meter Trick (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis, especially around Tribhuvan International Airport and tourist areas like Thamel, often claim their meters are broken and insist on inflated flat rates. Always use official taxi stands, ask for a working meter, or book via rideshare apps with set rates.

Money Exchange Scam (High Risk) - Tourists may encounter money changers in busy areas such as Thamel who offer deceptive exchange rates or claim they are out of large currency notes. Use authorized exchange offices or banks, and always count your cash before leaving the counter.

Street Performer Con (Medium Risk) - Some street performers in Durbar Square may ask for donations after a performance, often becoming aggressive if tourists do not comply. Enjoy the show but avoid giving money unless you are sure you want to, and keep an eye on your belongings.

Fake Tourist Information (Medium Risk) - Scammers near popular tourist sites may pose as official information providers and offer misleading tours or services at inflated prices. Always verify information from legitimate tourist offices or trusted guides.

Restaurant Menu Scam (Medium Risk) - Some eateries may offer a menu with prices significantly higher than what is listed or charge extra fees for basic services, especially in Thamel. Check multiple menus or ask locals for recommendations before dining.

Shopping "Bargain" Tricks (Low Risk) - In local markets like Asan, some vendors may start negotiations with inflated prices, expecting tourists to overpay. Do your research on usual prices, and don’t hesitate to walk away from unreasonable offers to ensure fair bargaining.

Transport Overcharge (Low Risk) - Rickshaw drivers in areas like Thamel sometimes refuse to use meters and ask for excessive flat fares. Always negotiate the fare before getting in or ask for the meter to be used; typical short rides should be around NPR 200-300.

« ☝️☝️☝️ In Nepal, killing a monkey can land you three years in prison. Here, these furry creatures are allowed quite a bit! Natives hold the monkey god Hanuman in high regard, as mentioned in the ancient epic "Ramayana," where monkeys aided the legendary hero Rama in defeating the ten-headed king of the island of Lanka, Ravana, who had kidnapped Sita.

To protect their homes from misfortune, many Nepalese recite prayers to Hanuman in the evenings. This prayer can only be said after sunset. However, it's believed that the prayer, called "Hanuman Chalisa," can be invoked at any time. Not wanting to disturb Hanuman with trivial matters during the day, when he has so much to do, people prefer to call upon him at night when danger looms. Such is life! ☝️☝️☝️ »

« Kathmandu shows extensive destruction. It's emotional to see this... However, the city is beautiful! For safety, I was given a hard hat. Thanks to my new Nepalese friend Raj for the wonderful tour of both touristy and off-the-beaten-path spots, and for keeping the spirits high! 😊 »

« This is how the outskirts of Kathmandu look now. People are living on the streets as there is still a risk of aftershocks. »

« In Kathmandu, there are so many paintings for sale. The friendly owner of the art shop allowed me to take photos, even though it's usually strictly forbidden. »
