Local Scam Alert: What to Watch For

Taxi Overcharge Scandal (High Risk) - Unofficial taxis, especially near Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and the airport, may charge inflated fares or claim that their meters are broken. Always use official taxi stands or reputable rideshare apps like Uber if available, and request a working meter upfront.

Fake Charity Scam (Medium Risk) - Tourists in prominent areas like Getreidegasse may encounter individuals soliciting donations for bogus charities, often using emotional tactics and fake identification. Politely decline and donate only to well-known organizations, preferably not on the street.

Distracting Street Performers (Medium Risk) - In crowded tourist locations like Mirabell Gardens, some street performers or entertainers may create distractions while accomplices pickpocket unsuspecting tourists. Stay alert in crowded spaces, keep valuables secured, and avoid engaging with overly aggressive performers.

Menu Misinformation (Medium Risk) - In local cafés, some menus might omit prices or include hidden charges, especially for tourists unfamiliar with local custom. Additionally, be wary of oversized group servings that could lead to higher costs. Always ask for clarity on prices and portions before ordering.

Counterfeit Souvenirs (Low Risk) - At market stalls around Mozartplatz, counterfeit goods, especially labeled as local crafts or souvenirs, may be sold for inflated prices. Purchase from official shops or well-reviewed vendors, and research authentic items before buying.

Luggage Handling Trick (Low Risk) - At the Salzburg train station, some may offer "assistance" with your luggage, then demand high tips for their service or risk theft. Manage your own bags and decline unsolicited help, especially in busy areas.

ATM Skimming (Low Risk) - During peak tourist seasons, particularly around festivals, ATMs in crowded areas might be tampered with to skim cards. Opt for ATMs located inside banks or well-lit public places and check machines for signs of tampering before use.

« Anif Castle near Salzburg. It's completely fenced off since it's private property. We absolutely respect private ownership, but we didn't want to leave without a good view. So, we had to break the rules and sneak in. 😊 »

« There is also a street here where modern advertising is prohibited, so you can find these wonderful wrought iron signs! :) »

« We saw this kind of transportation in Salzburg. In the Old Town, motor vehicles are prohibited, so it's quite convenient... By the way, what is it called? Let me know if you know! :) »

« Salzburg, Old Town. Vehicle traffic is banned in the Old Town, but horse-drawn transport is well represented. There are many magnificent horse-drawn carriages, and the horses are stunning, with gorgeous manes and tails…. The coachmen, who also serve as guides… 🐴✨ »

« In Austria, most pharmacies are cozy, like something out of a fairy tale, but a few are particularly special. There's one I won't show, as photography is prohibited... but it resembles a set from a movie about gnomes during Christmas. 🎄✨ »

« In Schaalzburg, children were specially "marked" so they wouldn't get lost :) »

« In the city, neon signs are prohibited. »
