The Heart of the European Union

Brussels, the capital of Belgium, serves as the administrative center of the European Union and hosts the headquarters of NATO. This alone hints at the influence and prestige of this vibrant city, also known as the home of the famous "Manneken Pis". The iconic statue of the "peeing boy" often surprises visitors with its modest size, yet it remains one of the city's quirkiest landmarks. Recently, Manneken Pis gained a "girlfriend" — a statue of a peeing girl tucked away in a narrow alley lined with restaurants. Unlike her counterpart, however, Jeanneke Pis faced a less warm reception.

One of Europe's most beautiful squares, the Grand Place, rebuilt in elaborate palace style after bombardments in 1695, stands near sleek modern apartment buildings. Just a short walk from the bustling Town Hall square, the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours chapel, a 17th-century gem with unusual sculptures and a historic altar, emerges as a hidden surprise for curious travelers. And then there’s the food scene: Brussels offers everything from traditional Belgian waffles with endless toppings to fresh oysters sold right on the street and a chance to taste the city’s famous Kwak beer. Visitors rarely run out of things to do in Brussels — every corner promises a new discovery.

Getting Around

On Foot
Brussels is highly walkable, with pedestrian-friendly areas like the historic Grand Place and the European Quarter, and it’s free to stroll around; remember to wear comfortable shoes as cobblestone streets can be tough on the feet. For a local experience, take the time to explore hidden alleyways and discover charming cafés that aren't on the main tourist routes.
Metro
Brussels Metro costs €2.40 per ride and operates from 5:30am to midnight, linking major areas like the Grand Place and Atomium, but consider buying a "Jump" smart card for seamless travel and discounts. Don't forget to validate your ticket at the station to avoid hefty fines!

« Brussels was chosen because of the ticket prices, plus the airfare, and practically a full 3 days (only for the weekend). In the end, it was a very charming city with plenty to see and do; it's quite convenient to explore nearby towns. Some people manage to see Brussels in 5-6 hours, but I barely got 40 km around (to be honest, I didn't manage to visit the parliament and Atomium, but I just wandered around and enjoyed the beautiful buildings). My language skills were limited, but I could manage to communicate a bit, which helped. Overall, everyone was very friendly, smiling, and seemed to understand that I had no clue about the local language, and they were nice enough to switch to English when necessary. On weekends, it’s affordable to stay there! There will be a post about the sights if I don't forget and if I have the energy, surely, that would be helpful to know! 😊 »

« Brussels fish - comics at homes, but I think I’ve overlooked this, because I discovered no more than 10 houses with comics or just "interesting" images. 😌 If you’re curious about this theme, it’s worth checking out places ahead of time… just strolling around the city, you won’t find a huge number of detailed houses. 😔 And those awful signs you’ll notice exactly! (I was walking sadly along this route in Prague, and there’s the same effect here.) 😔 As for the comics, of course, take a look! »
@dashailyuk
« Why Belgium, you ask? 😄 Well, because a ticket to Brussels with Ryanair cost only 10 euros! What better reason to visit a new country, right?

My first impression of Brussels: incredibly reminiscent of Paris. Every corner is filled with charming buildings featuring sweet little balconies, and yes, plenty of homeless individuals. Just like in Paris, not many people speak English, it’s mostly French. 😃

Overall, in Belgium, we’re welcomed by one city that I’ve long wanted to visit, but that’s a story for another time… »

« Strolls through Brussels.
I really enjoyed it: beautiful squares, delicious cuisine, rich beer traditions 😊. It's a pity that it's a bit chilly. The thermometer doesn't drop too much, but the cold wind can be quite dreary. »
@irulinka
« And I have no idea what's going on in this photo, where's the face? 🤣🤣 But I totally love this floral arrangement. The whole thing is golden and shimmering 😍 I'm also feeling that vibe of the 80s 😃 »

« I love observation decks. From the height, you can see the entire city, the breeze is fresher and purer, and you somehow feel completely alive. 🌆😊 »
@sonya_spanduni
« Grand-Place is a historic square in the center of Brussels. Here you can find the Town Hall and the King’s House. The flower carpet is not available year-round; it only appears in August. Also, there are plenty of souvenir shops here, targeted at tourists looking to buy everything under the sun. 🌸 »
@olgadebenoist
« Belgium definitely has its own vibe. In Brussels, I previously only passed through, and it struck me back then as a somewhat gloomy place with industrial overtones, reminiscent of apocalyptic landscapes, The Walking Dead, and the worlds of Orwell. But the historical center is incredibly beautiful, and it really lifts the spirit. 😊 »
@sasha_zaytseva
« Brussels is a very electric city. The center is filled with new buildings - some are striking and others are not very memorable. For example, a school and a slice of a residential block, which can be seen from the hotel window. After the war, there was a program for the demolition of old housing and, as a result, significant parts of Brussels' historical architecture were lost. But I find it charming. I feel very confident and calm here. 😊 »

« Brussels left me in a slight shock.

First of all, the prices. Everything here is really expensive. The accommodation I wrote about previously cost around $110 for a double room in a 10-bed dorm, and that was the cheapest option. It’s just absurd. You probably guessed that we didn’t spend the night in beds. 😂

Secondly, the people. Because the Belgians are quite tolerant, there are many refugees in Brussels. While I don't have any bias against other nations, their inappropriate behavior left me puzzled!

Thirdly, why exactly in Brussels there was a bunch of people from the Catalonia region of Spain. 😂 And they were walking around drunk with flags. They really reminded me of football fans.

As I already wrote, the accommodation here is unrealistically expensive, and since we were on a budget, we decided to spend the night at the bus station, where we would catch a bus to Cologne at 6 in the morning. Arriving at the bus station, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was so dirty!!! Just imagine, half the place was filled with garbage, like on a landfill. For me, it was quite strange. So many homeless people and refugees, a bit of criminal element. Due to exhaustion, I was ready to stay there, but luckily, my friend explored the territory, which made me start to feel a bit anxious, thinking I could end up looking as rough as some of the people we saw.

Then my friend said that we should definitely not stay there, and we should go for a walk. But this plan didn’t appeal to me, I felt freezing cold and just wanted to sleep. We began reminiscing about McDonald's. It turns out there’s a round-the-clock McDonald's in Brussels, where we spent the evening before heading back to the bus station. 😂 Picture spending a night in a total dump. Indeed, that was the vibe. The person sitting there was quite unwelcoming. There were homeless people, drunken people, and even other tourists like us, just hanging around sharing cigarettes. Someone tossed napkins to sleeping people, and someone else was snoring loudly. Overall, total chaos!

And I also couldn’t sleep because the security was walking around checking on the sleeping people. And I couldn’t sleep anyway because it felt like I was going to be mugged, just like I experienced here. It was a terrible night. And a very long one. 😱 »

« Brussels feels like my fairytale. This place is such a classic European city with a medieval vibe. But here, you can find modern touches that blend seamlessly with the old architecture, which is truly remarkable. It feels cozy and spacious at the same time.

Little alleys bring vibrant splashes of color to this massive metropolis. This is how it should be! 😊

Even the rain didn't stop me from falling in love with many places in Brussels. And oddly enough, I can't imagine what summer would be like here. The ambiance is just unbelievable! 😻 »
@vakulenko
« The Eurozone is very democratic and tolerant - the streets are filled with many refugees and homeless people, and alternative lifestyles are embraced. It’s said that the smell of marijuana permeates the air (you can buy it, just not in every bar/store). Teens are often seen hanging out on the bridge, doing their own thing - by the way, the streets are really clean. We even saw them cleaning it with shampoo and a special technique. However, they don’t drink alcohol on the streets - for that, there are bars and cafes. In the outdoor dining areas, the temperature in the middle of winter doesn’t drop below 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Many cyclists share the pedestrian paths, and drivers tend to let pedestrians cross rather easily. 😊 »
@risstik
« My first impression of Brussels left me with lingering thoughts from last night, when the streets were lively only with fast food spots open. The flashing lights of the police and ambulances glided through the streets while I maneuvered through uneven pavements, trying to get back to my hotel away from the noise and rowdy crowds. However, during the day, it wasn’t as chaotic, although you can still sense the remnants of the city's rougher edges. Yet, the food scene is amazing! I had some of the best fries I've ever tasted. 🍟😋 »

« I visited Belgium for the second time, but this time I finally decided to visit Brussels. A lot of people were hesitant, arguing that this city doesn't quite reflect the country as a whole. Nonetheless, I made the decision to go for a couple of hours just to check it out.

Since it was December 31st, there were quite a few tourists around, which gave a mixed feeling about the place. The architecture was simply mesmerizing! 😍 The buildings are incredibly beautiful. If you were to take the tourists, trash, and homeless people out of Brussels, the city would feel almost magical. 💖

Would I go back? I think I definitely would! Spending just one day isn't enough to explore everything, and I’d love to carve out more time for leisurely strolls through the streets. And definitely not on a holiday or weekend! ✌🏽 »

« About the writer boy and girl, I won’t write anything 😄 but here’s a doggo I’ll showcase))) This exhibit sometimes draws in a crowd of people 🐕 and there are hardly any tourists... Compared to other “showcases,” this one stands out 😅... »

« Brussels, Belgium, delicious snacks 🤩 Belgian waffles and chocolate - absolutely amazing! 👍 About the prices: everything in Belgium is much cheaper than in France 😉. You definitely have to try them, it's a must! 🤔 »
@velichkotatiana
« Every step is a joy! Oh my! I'm holding on as best as I can! The beauty of Belgium is stunning, like chocolate! How do I describe such an experience? Surely, no one can resist it, except perhaps when the price can hold you back from indulging. »

« Visiting the famous sculpture of a boy peeing in Brussels is only worth it if you happen to be near the waffle shop with those delicious soft waffles 😍 Overall, this experience left me a bit confused 😒. »

« I absolutely adore European Christmas markets! 😍 The atmosphere there instantly charges you with a festive New Year’s spirit. 🎄✨ »

« On the way to Paris, we decided to stop by Brussels, Belgium. I’m writing this with my familiar enthusiasm. This city truly delights me, especially during the festive season. At this time, the square is filled with sparkling lights, and the Christmas markets are open well past December 25th! 🎄✨ »
@elena_sent
« How about "the eyes closed to what’s happening"? 😂 The famous "Little Boy Writing" statue is a must-see in Belgium! 🇧🇪 Here’s a shot taken at night; otherwise, getting a good picture with the boy can be a bit tricky. The locals actually dress him up in different costumes, and I was lucky enough to catch him in two outfits. 😎✔️ »

« In Brussels, we didn't have the best time exploring due to a heavy rain, but we managed to enjoy some great meals and fantastic Belgian beer. The service was good, and the owner of one of the places went out of his way to help us choose food and drinks. In general, everyone treated us well here; we felt welcomed and at ease.

The locals are not standoffish, and most of the pubs were filled with local residents enjoying drinks and playing board games. The atmosphere was vibrant and warm, making the experience worthwhile despite the rainy weather. »

« Now, a little about Brussels.. Brussels felt very small and compact to me, and I usually prefer larger cities 😎.. However, there’s something here that you won't find in other places! You can buy antiques and not worry about their authenticity. Brussels is a paradise for those who love beer 🍻 and chocolate 🍫! The people here are very calm and not rushed. You need to try the mussels, fries 🍟, and croquettes with shrimp sauce 🦐🍜! And lastly, the central square of Brussels 🏛️ is the most beautiful in Europe 🇪🇺! You can only come here to gaze at it ❤️❤️❤️ Overall, my advice is to visit this place only after you've been to London 🏙️, Paris 🗼, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Prague, and Rome 🇮🇹 in Europe 🇪🇺. »

« Strolling through Brussels 😌🍬🍷🤭... the pre-holiday markets, the warmth from the glow of the lights, the river glistening, crowds of tourists, and an abundance of delicious food 🤤. »

« The atmosphere in Brussels during the holiday season is simply magical! 🎄 The vibrant, illuminated streets, adorned with Christmas trees, truly evoke the arrival of the New Year. It's a festive wonderland that fills you with joy and excitement for what's to come! ✨ »

« The famous statue of a writing boy, the reality of waiting 😅😂 made me imagine something bigger, but in fact, you can just walk by and not even notice it. Attention is drawn only because of the crowd of tourists. The accessibility of this place is pretty limited; in my opinion, you can only eat and drink here 😅😅. »
@allawayg
« For the second time, I found Brussels to be even more delightful. It felt like a charming little home away from home. Based on my impressions, I can describe it with a few words — sweet, sympathetic, musical, definitely not Amsterdam. 😄 »
@mitrofanova_m
« Brussels, after Amsterdam and other European capitals, might seem pale and unremarkable, but it captured my heart back in August when I visited for the first time. While it may not be as glamorous, it is a vibrant city with its own unique charm. 😊 »

« Brussels is a city full of contradictions... Glass skyscrapers stand next to slums, and it hosts the headquarters of NATO and the EU. Only about 20% of the people on the streets are Europeans; the rest are immigrants... In short, I can't recommend visiting... »

« My first impression of Brussels: the aroma hits you as soon as you step into the station... And it makes sense – train stations are filled with all sorts of "smells"... But in Brussels, the station smells like waffles! 🧇✨ »

« We found this beauty in one of the central alleys of Brussels. Nearby, familiar alcoholics threatened each other with consequences. The corners had a nice aroma. What can I say! The capital of Europe in all its glory! »
